What lawmakers are working on
Georgia's General Assembly is between sessions; the next session begins January 11, 2027. Study committees meet during the fall. Congress is in session, with several federal deadlines in December.
Year-end deadlines: health centers, TANF, flood insurance
Besides government funding (Dec 11), the National Flood Insurance Program and surface transportation authority expire Dec 11. Funding for community health centers, TANF and several Medicare provisions runs out Dec 31 unless Congress extends it.
Committee reviews new voting machines for Georgia
A legislative committee charged with recommending new voting equipment heard from three vendors about machines that produce paper ballots, asking about security, disaster planning and production speed. More vendors present this month; new machines are expected before the 2028 elections.
Federal funding extended to December 11
Congress passed a short-term funding bill so the government did not shut down on September 30. The House vote was 370–48. Funding now runs through December 11, 2026, when Congress must act again.

Lawmakers gave final approval to a bill letting pharmacists prescribe hormonal contraception such as pills and shots without a doctor’s sign-off, and sent it to the governor. Check the bill page for its final status.
SB 556: new DREAMS need-based college aid
Creates a need-based aid program with $25 million for students over two years and a $300 million endowment, places naloxone (Narcan) at colleges, and raises education savings plan contribution limits.

The compromise budget adds 124 medical residency slots, raises some Medicaid billing rates, and funds 500 NOW/COMP waivers for Georgians with disabilities.

Pentagon's FORTRESS plan: military bases to run 90 days on their own
Under FORTRESS America, launched September 30, the Defense Department wants every major military base in the continental U.S. able to keep essential operations going for at least 90 days without outside power, water, fuel or supplies, in case a major war or attack disrupts civilian infrastructure. Plans include on-base power such as microgrids and small reactors, stockpiles, and lining up factories that could switch to defense production. This applies to military bases only. It is not a lockdown or stay-at-home order for the public, and no budget or completion date has been announced.
What's on Georgia's November 3 ballot
Georgians will vote for U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, school superintendent, the insurance, labor and agriculture commissioners, two Public Service Commission seats, all 14 U.S. House seats and every state House and Senate seat. County and city races vary by address.
Three statewide ballot questions
Voters will also decide three statewide questions: creating a Next Generation 911 fund, making probate judge elections nonpartisan, and raising the Conservation Use Value Assessment acreage limit from 2,000 to 4,000 acres. The full wording is on your sample ballot.
Congress returns to funding deadline after the midterms
